STATEMENT
Lines, shapes, and sheer mass of structures are what I convey within my work. I use the shapes and lines that I see in my everyday life to create minimal structures. My pieces create a movement in space that the viewer needs to navigate in order to experience.
Taking on a modular feel, my sculptures act as building blocks. These building blocks allow me to create artwork that can go vertically, horizontally, and generate volume to create different atmospheres in a space. Fabricating pieces that go vertically create an overpowering monumental feel. Pieces that stretch over an extended span can dissect a space or create a directional movement. Other modular pieces that take on the volume of a space can generate an engaged environmental feel.
Working with tack welds allows the viewer to see that a human hand created it. These welds are not just a fundamental component but also an aesthetic element to the work. Using this type of weld takes away the appearance of the pieces being solid and cold. Making the artists hand visible helps humanize the structure, giving it a uniform, playful quality versus a harsh and formidable one.
When using industrial materials, it gives the artwork a seemingly larger weight and mass. Using sheet metal allows me to create large work that contains sizeable volumes. When joining different materials in my work it creates a break in the pieces. This break creates lines for the viewer’s eye to follow and creates different textural plains within the piece. The materials that I use are common enough that the viewer can recognize them from their everyday interactions.
